A 55 km route from Aritzo to Lanusei, to retrace the path of the young men called up for military service, on the eve of the First World War.
Also this year Francesco Calledda “Zigheddu” 87 years old , did not give up the march that, from his hometown, takes him to the center of Ogliastra, where the then military command was located, where the youth of Barbagia went.
And so, at dawn yesterday, the retired former bank employee set off towards Ogliastra, followed by his faithful travelling companions Nicola Calledda, Tanino Figus, Antonello Todde and others who had come for the occasion from Meana Sardo.
An appointment, his, that has been going on for 35 years now, climbing the heights that, from the Gennargentu Aritzese, reach the forest of Girgini, the nuraghe of Ruinas and border the lake of Flumendosa. To then descend to Lanusei, following the forest of Selene.
Around 7 pm Zigheddu and his companions arrived at their destination: «This time it had a different meaning - says Calledda - with the walk dedicated to our friend Giovanni Serrau, from Ulassai who passed away just a few hours ago. We shared the Aritzo-Lanusei with him for decades».
But the gaze of the most famous walker on the island is already on the next commitments: "I am completing the path of the Jubilee churches - says Zigheddu - only northern Sardinia is missing. I plan to complete this piece within the year".
