From the Municipal Council of Mandas comes a firm no to the wind farm project called "Lobadas" to be built in the territory of the Municipalities of Mandas, Escolca, Serri, Isili and Genoni.

The council meeting, convened by the mayor Umberto Oppus, met to examine the environmental impact assessment procedure of the project for the construction of a plant for the production of electricity from renewable wind sources.

«Private entrepreneurs, using the faculties provided by European and national legislation, – we read in the resolution – are presenting numerous requests to the Sardinia Region for the construction of wind farms to be located in areas of best realization in terms of exploitation of wind energy. But the construction of these plants entails a strong impact on the territory, as the installation of wind turbines consisting of towers and large blades is envisaged, which would disfigure the soil and deprive rural areas of a traditional and strongly identifying use such as agriculture and grazing". These considerations are at the basis of the sharp opposition expressed by the Municipal Council of Mandas: «Our territory has a strong tourist vocation and characterization, therefore the wild installation of wind turbines would create a decay of this source of prosperity and image», he Mayor Oppus said in the Chamber.

The project, presented by the company Rwe Renewables Italia of Rome, involves the construction and operation of a plant for the production of energy from renewable wind sources with a total power of 86.4 megawatts, consisting of 12 wind turbines and related works connected civil and electrical systems (assembly and maintenance pitches, internal and external roads in the park, cable ducts, user station).

The planned wind turbines have a height of 117 meters and a maximum rotor diameter of 172 metres.
