A despicable act of vandalism last night in Mandas . The statue of Gigi Riva , created by local sculptor Mario Matta, placed in the town square on November 9th in the presence of dozens of children, was damaged by hammer blows .

An arm was broken and some fingers of the left hand were shattered .

Mayor Umberto Oppus , indignant, asks that "those guilty of this gesture without a reason, who struck one of the modern symbols of our country, be immediately identified by the police and reported ." Moreover, whoever struck the statue will soon be identified thanks to a camera that allegedly filmed the gesture .

The statue made of local stone was donated by the municipal administration to the citizens with a touching ceremony, in the presence of Mauro Riva, his family and some former rossoblù footballers, including Renato Copparoni.
