A sacrilegious theft, committed last night in Macomer, is causing indignation among thousands of believers. It is the statue of Sant'Antonio di Padova (or Sant'Antoni 'e su Monte), which was locked in the niche created fifty years ago on the sides of the provincial road, which leads to the mountain of Sant'Antonio.
The thieves forced the niche and took away the precious statuette. It has always been a place of pilgrimage for many faithful and a point of reference for the society of Sant'Antonio, who immediately raised the alarm and reported the fact to the police. The theft is creating a lot of indignation and is being harshly commented on social media, with unanimous condemnation.
"It is a statue very dear to our fellow citizens - says Giangiacomo Oggianu, president of the society of Sant'Antonio di Padova - at first we thought it was a prank, perhaps committed by someone in the mood to play pranks. We searched everywhere, we asked many people, but there was no trace of the statue". The investigation is ongoing.
