Three solutions and much controversy, with the possibility that the start of construction of the six-kilometer link road, intended to connect the two 554s, will continue and be delayed. This project, funded years ago with €80 million and expected to improve traffic flow in the area, currently connects the 554 to Terra Mala with the 554 to Cagliari via a stretch of the old, two-lane Orientale highway. This creates a bottleneck, especially at the Maracalagonis junction, with long queues marking commuters' return home, especially during the summer. For some time, Anas has been proposing a four-lane road and a completely new route. Three design proposals were put forward years ago by Anas. Only one remains: so-called route 1, recommended by the Municipality of Maracalagonis with the approval of neighboring municipalities, and route 2, which appears to be the one Anas is pursuing.

The issue had been quiet for some time. A few days ago, the cold snap: "The Municipality," says Mayor Francesca Fadda, "was contacted by the Region for a new EIA process and the launch of a new environmental consultation, which came from MASE. We're not going along with this. Of the three design solutions initially evaluated, Anas selected the only one expressly rejected by all the municipalities involved. This decision appears arbitrary, taken without considering the numerous observations and contributions we've provided in the past. Our position remains unchanged. We will do everything we can to ensure that our reasons, which are those of the population, are respected."

For former Urban Planning Councilor and now minority councilor Antonio Melis, "the issue should be brought back to the City Council. We also support solution number 1, a route already envisioned in the 2003 Urban Planning Plan (PUC). ANAS cannot ignore the recommendations coming from the grassroots level."

For Councilor Gianluca Mudu, still in the minority in the Council, "we need to be able to read the technical studies and understand that there is only one option available: number 2, because the other two present implementation challenges. Let's return to the Council."
