A World War I bomb in the courtyard of a house in Laconi.

The device was found yesterday morning during the cleaning and restoration operations of the ground beneath the perimeter wall of the house, which had collapsed some time ago. The house is uninhabited for most of the year, the owners live elsewhere.

The device is a “Sipe” type hand grenade, a pre-set fragmentation model, in a very poor state of preservation and without a safety system for handling.

The area was immediately evacuated to allow for cleanup and safety. The device was detonated in an abandoned quarry in the countryside of Laconi: the operation was carried out by personnel from the Artificer Unit of the Provincial Carabinieri Command of Nuoro.
