Chaos at the Bancali prison in Sassari. An inmate in the infirmary department set her cell on fire.

The immediate arrival of the prison police prevented a tragedy from happening: the officers extinguished the flames and took the other inmates to a safe place.

«The decisive intervention of the penitentiary police was timely and providential, even if it was complicated by the smoke caused», explains Antonio Cannas, national delegate for Sardinia of the autonomous penitentiary police union (Sappe), who blames politics: «We are disconcerted by the absence of measures in this regard against those responsible for this unacceptable violence and situations of great alarm, almost determining an emulation effect for other violent inmates. For example, those parliamentarians who rushed to Sassari to check on the health conditions of Alfredo Cospito did not notice."

Disappointment was also expressed by Donato Capece, general secretary of the Sappe: «With these further serious critical events, the number of police officers involved in serious incidents increases dramatically. We express our utmost solidarity and closeness to all our colleagues at the Bancali prison; and these latest episodes must make the leaders of the institute and the region reflect."
