For those who live with the unbearable burden of debt, finding a way out can seem like an impossible task. Yet, in Quartu, there is a new initiative for those trapped in economic difficulty. The “Liberi dal Debito” desk, created thanks to the memorandum of understanding with the Municipality, officially opens its doors with the aim of providing advice and assistance to those who find themselves in a condition of over-indebtedness, also helping to navigate the complex procedures provided for by the recent Code of Business Crisis and Insolvency.

According to data provided by the association, in Italy there are over seven million over-indebted individuals, people who live in daily fear of not being able to repay their debts, often marginalized and left alone in moments of greatest vulnerability. With the opening of the counter, the aim is to offer them a new opportunity to overcome the financial crisis and regain serenity.

"There are over 300 debt cancellation practices concluded positively thanks to the work of the professionals of Liberi dal Debito" , declared Jimmy Greselin, president of the association. "In our country there are millions of people in a condition of over-indebtedness and they are unable to get out of it alone: they need external help".

Gianluca Angius, 50 years old, from Quartu Sant'Elena, is today a concrete example of how legal support can change the lives of those in difficulty.

His is the first sentence of 2022 at the Cagliari court, which allowed him to cancel over 450 thousand euros of debts accumulated with the banks after the bankruptcy of the family business caused by the global economic crisis of 2008.

“The Suicide Prevention Law saved me,” says Angius, recounting his long struggle against economic hardship. For seven years, banks took a fifth of his salary every month, leaving him a prisoner of his own life: “I couldn’t do anything. I struggled and limited every expense. I had neither the freedom nor the dignity to plan my future.”

The turning point came in 2019, when, almost by chance, Angius discovered Law 3 of 2012, also known as the “suicide prevention law,” which allows debtors to find a way out of over-indebtedness. “I saw the story of an entrepreneur who was in the same situation as me. I decided to find out more, and I realized that that law could change my life,” the man explains.

This law allowed him to clear his tax records, one year after the end of the legal process, and to look to the future with hope. "If I had known about this law before, perhaps I would not have lost everything. Our family heritage would still exist and I would have lived these years with more serenity and dignity."

Today, Angius is a free man, with a job as an employee, ready to plan a new life . «Thanks to the “Liberi dal Debito” desk and the laws in favor of the over-indebted, the hope is that more and more people can find financial freedom and the possibility of a more peaceful future».
