Funeral, church and controversy in Ossi. In the town on the outskirts of Sassari, a social post sparks a controversy with the parish priest, Don Felix Bauvains, for the choice to celebrate the last farewell to a fellow villager today and not on Sunday, as it is a “holiday”. A contested decision “considering the inconveniences that are created for the families of the deceased”, it was written on Facebook.
Some comments are a bit spicy, to the detriment of the church, and the priest's reaction is not long in coming: "If they want to start gossip, let them do it," says Father Bauvains, reached by phone. "In Ossi, funerals have not been celebrated on Sundays for a long time ." He emphasizes that yesterday he had another commitment in Oristano. "This story is nonsense, also because I visited the wife and son of the deceased and they did not complain about anything. I know that this controversy did not start with them." Bauvains stigmatizes people's behavior: "It is sad that priests are always expected to meet people but never the opposite."
The priest also points out that in yesterday morning's mass no one pointed anything out to him. "No one had machetes or waved flags. And then this post comes out... I see many Goliaths behind the keyboard and I am only David." And finally he clarifies. "Three Sundays ago I celebrated the funeral in the afternoon because there was an emergency and the relatives asked me to. This time there was no emergency." The funeral ceremony is scheduled for 3:00 pm in the parish of San Bartolomeo.
