"Sorry, I'm not well." These were the last words of Tonino Meloni , 72, deputy mayor of Quartucciu until a few days ago (and mayor in 1988 and 1997) and died struck by a heart attack in that classroom he attended since 1983 and where he has fought many battles for his city.

Historical exponent of the Socialist Party and two weeks back among the benches of the city assembly as councilor of the civic list, he had just taken the floor during the session of the City Council to discuss the second item on the agenda, that on the agreement with the municipalities of Maracalagonis, Castiadas and Villasimius, when he fell ill.

He sat down, accompanying himself to the counter with his hands, then immediately collapsed.

The councilors tried to help him and immediately called 118 . Until the ambulance arrived, two municipal police officers tried to revive him together with councilor Gianni Pistidda. First the Providence ambulance arrived and then the medicalized one, but for Tonino Meloni there was nothing to do .

The first to arrive from the family was his brother Augusto together with his two children who live a few steps from the palace in via Nazionale. Then the son Giovanni, the other brother, the sisters and closest friends: Gianni Manis, Pierpaolo Campus and Enrico Porcu. Incredulous, they hugged. Then they vented all their anger towards those who, according to them, would have betrayed him.

" You will have it on your conscience , you are traitors: now you cannot ignore it", the words of one of the nephews and his friend Campus. Tonino Meloni had been set aside by that same group, "Commitment and renewal" , of which he was part of until a few weeks ago, holding the role of deputy mayor and city planning councilor.
