Last gift to life for Luciano Bernini, the pensioner originally from Viterbo invested in Bari Sardo. His liver was removed at the Lanusei hospital, according to the protocols after brain death ascertained last night by the commission made up of Luigi Ferrai, director of Our Lady of Mercy, Francesco Loddo, director of the Anesthesia and Resuscitation department, and Gianluca Deiana, neurologist at San Francesco di Nuoro .

The organ, transported to Cagliari on board an Areus helicopter which landed on the helipad of the Lanusei firefighters, who provided full technical support to the operation, was donated to a Sardinian patient. The surgical team from the Brotzu of Cagliari, directed by Fausto Zamboni of the Liver Transplant Center, took part in the activities in various capacities, assisted in the delicate sampling operation by a multidisciplinary team from the Lanusei hospital, composed of the surgeon Gian Pietro Gusai and a team of anesthetists and instrumentalists.

"The successful outcome of this process - explained Francesco Loddo - demonstrates how important active participation is for spoke hospitals like ours in the Sardinian transplant network in which the organ collection center of the Ogliastra local health authority is active and efficient".

Loddo thanked the great sensitivity shown by the family: «My thoughts go first and foremost to the deceased and his family who did not hesitate for a moment to offer consent to the removal of the organs. This gesture of extraordinary generosity - concluded the head of Anesthesia and Resuscitation - will give life to another person".
