A 69-year-old French tourist was stopped in Porto Torres by Customs Agency officials while boarding a ferry bound for Toulon with 40 kilos of sand, pebbles and shells taken from the coast of northern Sardinia .
According to officials, white pebbles and very fine sand had been illegally removed from Le Saline beach in Stintino. The sand was hidden in the trunk of the car and under the seats.
The woman, having violated regional law 16 of 2017 which prohibits the removal of sand, pebbles and shells from coastlines, will be sanctioned with a fine ranging from a minimum of 500 euros to a maximum of 3,000 euros .
The material stolen from the beach has been seized and will be returned to its natural environment in the coming days.
