"The Meloni Government has decided to abandon the Italian provinces and the most fragile territories, drastically cutting the funds allocated to the maintenance of provincial roads. A very serious choice that particularly affects the whole of Southern Italy and also Sardinia, with direct consequences on the safety of citizens, workers and businesses that use thousands of kilometers of provincial roads."

Thus the PD deputy, Silvio Lai , in a note, explaining that «with the Budget Law and the Milleproroghe, the executive has halved the 51 million euros already assigned to the Sardinian provinces (Cagliari, Nuoro, Sassari, South Sardinia and Oristano), with a net cut of 50% equal to 24 million euros between 2025 and 2028. 3.1 million and 410 thousand euros have been subtracted from the Province of Oristano alone, 8.5 million from the province of Sassari, 4.2 million from Nuoro, over 3 million from South Sardinia will be missing, 5.4 million from Cagliari».

"The paradox - continues the Sardinian parliamentarian - is that while the Government is taking away essential funds for the daily safety of citizens, Minister Salvini continues to chase the media dream of the Bridge over the Strait, ignoring the real and urgent construction sites in our provinces. As has been pointed out by several local administrators in Sardinia, there are thousands of kilometers of provincial roads. We cannot continue to ignore this reality. Ministerial funds are needed, and they are needed immediately also because these are cuts that affect works that have already been contracted out".

Again, the Democratic Party representative continues, "the Regional Council has tried to react, increasing the Single Fund for Local Authorities to 60 million euros, with the commitment to reach 100 million. But the size of the national cut forces the Region to cover the hole by taking resources away from other strategic priorities". "It's an uphill race - concludes Lai and the national Government has consciously chosen to leave the most fragile territories alone, with construction sites at risk and responsibilities offloaded elsewhere".

The Five Star Movement is also on the attack. "The Meloni government has officially turned its back on the most fragile territories in Italy, striking a blow against Sardinia ," says Five Star senator Sabrina Licheri . Adding: "With an irresponsible act, the executive has decided to cut by 50% the funds allocated to the Sardinian provinces for road maintenance, going from 51 to 27 million euros between 2025 and 2028. An unacceptable decision that puts the safety of citizens, workers and businesses at risk."
