The surge in flu and pneumonia cases continues to put pressure on doctors, emergency rooms and hospitals, and Sardinia is one of the hardest-hit regions in Italy.
The data
According to the latest epidemiological report "Respivirnet" by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, flu-like syndromes had an incidence of 20.32 (cases per thousand patients) on the island, the highest in the country, and the most affected age group (78.74) was that of young children, from 0 to 4 years old.
But in addition to influenza viruses, the respiratory syncytial virus, SarsCoV2, rhinovirus, and metapneumovirus, among others, contribute to the growth of infections .
With the flu spike in recent weeks, pneumonia cases are also increasing, and with them, the impact on family doctors and hospitals, which are often forced to keep patients in emergency rooms for long periods of time waiting for a bed to become available in the ward.
