A new and innovative technique for the fight against tumors. At Businco in Cagliari - for the first time on the island and among the first in Italy - in the Arnas G.Brotzu Oncological Radiotherapy centre, directed by Raffaele Barbara was subjected to radiation treatment, with the volumetric total body irradiation technique , the first patient admitted to the Hematology Facility and Bone Marrow Transplant Center.

The one in question is a volumetric technique implemented thanks to the arrival of the very modern linear accelerators (LINAC) and a rotating treatment table supplied .

A success for the entire work team (doctors, physicists, technicians and nurses) who dedicated time and energy to develop this new technique which radically modifies the old one. Now patients will be able to enjoy significant advantages : greater safety , a significant reduction in toxicity , greater speed of execution, and a better and more comfortable positioning of the patient on the treatment table which, thanks to its characteristics, allows better adherence to the therapy.

«Radiation therapy also plays an essential role in supporting the other means we have to treat tumors», commented the general director of Arnas G. Brotzu, Agnese Foddis, according to whom «the new technique used is an important goal achieved by Radiotherapy Oncology of Businco, confirming how much the process of modernizing the service contributes to improving the level of assistance to citizens". «The great economic and human effort put in place in recent years – concludes the directorate – by all our staff, will allow, thanks to the use of advanced techniques, to guarantee the best care to the patients who rely on our hospital, point of reference for the whole island".
