Another arrest for the now well-known fake carabiniere scam in Sardinia . The Cagliari police ordered it against a 28-year-old Neapolitan who managed to extort money and jewelry from two elderly people for a total value of over 150 thousand euros .
The mechanism of the scam is always the same, well-oiled. The victim is contacted by phone by a person who presents himself as a lawyer, carabiniere or policeman to inform him that his son has hit a pedestrian causing serious injuries. Money is needed to avoid him going to prison .
The old man panics and has no way out except to give gold and cash to prevent his son from going to prison. While the victim is held on the phone, so that he cannot ask anyone for help or contact the son who allegedly caused the fake accident, another person shows up at his door, whose job it is to collect money and valuables . Always introducing himself as a lawyer, carabiniere or policeman.
The two victims had described exactly this situation, they had given away money and jewels for a total monstrous value of around 150 thousand euros .
The Police, having received the complaint, began their investigations. By analyzing the images from the video surveillance of the area and combing through the gold-buying shops in the city where the swindler had sold some of the extorted jewels, they managed to trace one of the perpetrators. It is a 28-year-old Neapolitan, who in the meantime had left the Island .
This morning the young man was arrested and was ordered to be held in prison . The order was carried out by the State Police of Cagliari in collaboration with investigators from the Naples Flying Squad; the 28-year-old was tracked down in his home in Afragola (Naples) and taken to prison.
