Enough with the "announced tragedies " along the Statale 130.

This is the position taken by Maria Laura Orrù , mayor of Elmas and regional councilor, after the tragic accident that cost the life of a 39-year-old cyclist , hit by a truck in the territory of Assemini . A drama that has rekindled the debate on the need to secure the main roads in the Cagliari hinterland.

“The Metropolitan City of Cagliari - wrote Orrù on Facebook - is increasingly in need of parallel and alternative connections to the roads traveled daily by the vehicles that move to and from the hinterland. The chronicles, once again, report the tragic accidents involving cyclists who find themselves traveling or crossing very busy stretches of road, not having dedicated tracks. And yesterday afternoon a cyclist lost his life, once again leaving family and friends in the most excruciating pain. These announced tragedies must be remedied ”.

"In the stretch of the SS130 that connects the municipalities of Assemini , Decimomannu and Elmas to the capital - Orrù underlines - a safe track should have been created, physically separated from the carriageways destined for motor vehicles , and over the years the European and regional economic resources destined to this project have only been partially exploited, with the sad consequences mentioned above ”.

And again: "The associations that promote sustainable mobility have been complaining about these conditions for years, and it is urgent to give voice to their requests, which would have an immediate impact, both for the people who transit every day and use alternative means of transport to the car, and for the motorists themselves who would see the several kilometers entering the Metropolitan City belt lightened by traffic.

We had and must do more - concludes the mayor of Elmas -, especially if we consider the gigantic opportunity of the PNRR, we had and we must think of something much, much more concrete and immediate.

It must be a structured intervention, which takes into consideration the local mobility needs for the municipalities involved and those of the citizens who pass through them to reach the intermodal connection nodes such as stations and airports ".
