They had ventured by kayak into the waters of the Tavolara marine protected area but the rapidly worsening weather conditions put them in serious difficulty.
Two canoeists were rescued by the Olbia Coast Guard , the first was spotted near the island of Molara at the mercy of the waves and promptly rescued by the crew, the second was rescued by CP 803 on the island of Tavolara where he had managed to save himself.
The report was received by the operations room from fellow canoeists, who, upon returning to Cala Suaraccia beach in San Teodoro, realized they had lost visual contact with two of their group. Both canoeists suffered only a nasty scare; their good health meant they did not require medical attention.
"The Port Authority of Olbia reminds anyone planning to engage in maritime activities to always carefully check the weather forecast, as sea conditions can undergo sudden, yet predictable, changes throughout the day," the Northern Sardinia Maritime Directorate recommended in the statement. "Yesterday, in fact, a progressive increase in wind and sea conditions was forecast starting in the early afternoon."
