The new Linac Versa Hd accelerator, cutting-edge equipment in anti-noise therapies, has come into operation in the Radiotherapy area of Businco in Cagliari.
«An important investment that will allow us to reduce waiting lists and extra-region mobility of cancer patients», comments the general director of Arnas Brotzu, Agnese Foddis, shortly after cutting the ribbon on the new equipment. «The arrival of these innovative technologies, purchased thanks to the financing transferred from the CIPE and through the funds included in the Pnrr, with regional co-financing (for a cost of almost twenty million euros), confirms how important it is for the entire island territory the radiotherapy of Businco, which is a candidate to become the regional point of reference for the treatment of oncological and oncohaematological pathologies", concludes the manager.
For the ribbon cutting this morning, there were the president of the Region Christian Solinas, the health director Raimondo Pinna, the administrator Ennio Filigheddu, the director of Businco Maria Teresa Addis and the head doctor of the department, Raffaele Barbara.
Modern radiotherapy techniques allow targeted and tailored treatments to be performed on the site of the neoplastic lesion, selectively sparing the healthy organs adjacent to the neoplasm. This determines a significant reduction in side effects and therefore a significant reduction in toxicities related to radiation treatment.
«The precision of the radiation treatment and the personalization of the treatment, adapted to the individual patient, are two fundamental concepts that allow us to obtain excellent results in the control of the neoplasm while safeguarding the healthy tissues adjacent to the tumor lesion», clarifies the director of Radiotherapy Raffaele Barbara, who adds: «The new Linac Versa Hd delivers the dose with millimetric precision and is equipped with systems for checking the targets of the dose delivered and the volumes treated which allow the radiotherapy cycle to be carried out with maximum accuracy and safety for the patient. In the past, irradiations with larger and less structured treatment volumes contributed, yes, to the healing and/or control of the neoplastic lesion, but at the cost of heavy side effects, which today, with new techniques, are a thing of the past" , concludes Barbara.
The new accelerator, the result of the most advanced technology, will not operate alone: it will have a twin that will be active starting from March 2024.
But in February 2024, Businco Radiotherapy will also be able to make use of the contribution of Helical Tomotherapy, which will allow the treatment of all types of tumors and will allow all the most modern Radiotherapy treatments to be performed, in line with the most advanced oncology centers in Italy.
Finally, in July 2024, the planned technological modernization plan will end with the operation of the Cyberknife, capable of satisfying the treatment needs of the entire regional territory. This radiotherapy technology uses robotics and artificial intelligence to perform ablative treatments on malignant and benign neoplastic lesions (e.g. neuromas) and non-neoplastic lesions that are inoperable due to the location where they are located or very small lesions where surgery is contraindicated.
