Breast surgery restarts in Nuoro: a new beginning for women in the area

Today, in the operating rooms of the San Francesco Hospital in Nuoro, the long-awaited resumption of breast surgery sessions took place, a fundamental step in the project of rebirth of breast surgery in the region. The operation was performed by the breast surgery team, directed by Dr. Rita Nonnis, who worked closely with plastic and reconstructive surgeons and anesthetists, in an operation that marks the beginning of a path of care and support for the women of Nuoro.
This resumption represents a crucial moment in the realization of the project, strongly supported by the Regional Health Department, aimed at reactivating the simple departmental structure of Breast Surgery. Dr. Rita Nonnis, a prominent figure with over 40 years of experience in Sassari, has been called to lead this new phase of development for the territory. "Starting this new work experience gives me a lot of energy", comments Dr. Nonnis, who adds: "With the new work group, we are already enthusiastically preparing a project that can offer a timely and quality service to the many women of this territory, who in the past were forced to turn to other facilities in the region or the Peninsula to have breast surgery".
Today's surgical session is only the first step in a process that is expected to be long and demanding, but essential for the health of Nuoro. As underlined by the general director of ASL 3 of Nuoro, Paolo Cannas, "this is an important day for the public health of Nuoro, because it reopens a process that will see us, I hope in the short term, reopen a Breast Unit capable of offering women in the area (and not only) a model of care focused on the diagnosis, treatment and psychophysical rehabilitation of women affected by breast cancer". The project is not limited, therefore, to surgery alone, but aims to create a center of excellence that accompanies women in all phases of treatment, offering them integrated care that also includes screening, clinical-instrumental diagnostics and psychological support, to face the difficulties related to the disease with greater serenity and competence. This initiative represents a real turning point for the health of Nuoro, a promise of quality and timely care for women in the area, who will now be able to access specialized treatments without having to travel far. The resumption of Breast Surgery in Nuoro is a concrete sign of attention to women's health, a project that, over time, could become a point of reference for all of Sardinia.
