Baunei, crushed by a tree in the Pools of Venus: Marina Masia dies at the age of 28
The victim was a medical resident. The accident area was closed off due to landslides
Tragedy in Baunei . A tree detached from a ridge at the Piscine di Venere overwhelmed a 28-year-old girl from Nuoro. The victim's name was Marina Masia: she was a medical specialist.
The attempts of the doctors who arrived on the spot with Areus' ambulance sent from the 118 station in Sassari were in vain. The young woman died in the arms of the rescuers : the plane stopped on the Dorgali football field.
According to what was reconstructed by the Olbia coast guard, shortly before 2.30 pm the girl had reached the area aboard a dinghy rented in Cala Gonone with her mother and brother.
The vessel has reached Cala delle Piscine di Venere, a 25-metre strip of sand that can only be reached by sea, bordered by buoys and forbidden to boats due to the danger of landslides. The area was therefore off limits.
It is not yet clear whether she was hit by the tree while she was swimming near the ridge, or overwhelmed and killed by the tree while she was in the still shallow water.
The body was recovered by a vehicle of the Arbatax coast guard and transported to the small port of Cala Gonone. The public prosecutor of Lanusei has opened an investigation.
"I express my condolences and my closeness to the family of the young victim for this tragedy that has touched me personally and the entire Baunese community," said mayor Stefano Monni.
