Tense moments erupted yesterday at the Monastir hotspot , where a Carabinieri officer was attacked by one of the facility's residents . The officer, commander of the Public Order team of the 9th Carabinieri Battalion "Sardegna," has been discharged with a 30-day prognosis. The regional secretariat of the New Carabinieri Union of Sardinia expressed its solidarity with his colleague, describing it in a statement as a "very serious" incident.
"What happened represents a very serious incident , confirming the validity of the concerns expressed by NSC Sardegna regarding the working conditions of the staff employed at the Monastir hotspot," the statement reads. The union also emphasizes that the attacker's arrest and the summary proceedings "do not erase the gravity of the incident," calling for action to address the organizational, logistical, and operational issues that, it says, expose staff to risky situations on a daily basis.
"The physical safety of the Carabinieri cannot be the price we pay for the logistical and management deficiencies of the Monastir facility ," stated Claudio Lubrano and Carlo Rosas of the regional secretariat of NSC Sardinia. The union's demands include clear operational guidelines for emergency management, adequate security, suitable premises, and sanitary conditions compatible with the service provided. "Staff cannot be left alone to compensate, at their own personal risk, for organizational deficiencies that are no longer tolerable," the statement concludes.
