While clearing weeds from a plot of pine and olive trees, members of the EcoToni social cooperative found the crucifix that had been stolen 20 years ago from the cathedral of Santa Maria.
It happened in Fertilia, during the redevelopment of an abandoned green space.
«A construction site for the valorization of the woodland heritage of the Municipality of Alghero – confirms Chiara Rosnati of EcoToni – and while we were pruning and cleaning the land we found what looked like a rag, which was actually an old shirt in which the crucifix had been wrapped».
The operators were greatly surprised by that discovery.
The find was immediately taken to Father Filippo, of the nearby parish of San Marco. «He told us, however, that he didn't remember that it had belonged to the church of Fertilia», continues Chiara Rosnati. Then the police subsequently clarified that it was an object stolen about 20 years ago from the Cathedral of Santa Maria.
