A tense day in Massama prison. Yesterday, as reported by the Sinappe union, there was a full-blown riot, with riots and violent actions by inmates in several wards simultaneously . In Ward 1B, some inmates completely destroyed corridor furniture, damaged a water pipe, and started a fire.
In Ward 2B, another inmate set fire to objects in his cell, and only the timely intervention of the Penitentiary Police officers prevented more serious consequences. In Ward 2A High Security 3, another inmate destroyed all the ceiling lights, causing further damage.
Making the situation even more alarming, as Regional Secretary Raffaele Murtas emphasized, " is the severe staffing shortage that is seriously jeopardizing the facility's safety. The officers on duty are exhausted, beyond their limits, forced to work shifts that exceed any conceivable operational reasonableness, with workloads no longer compatible with minimum safety standards. Despite this, the Penitentiary Police staff have once again demonstrated professionalism, composure, and a sense of duty, managing to bring the situation under control in extremely difficult operating conditions."
Sinappe urgently requests immediate intervention from the Administration to restore minimum safety conditions and strengthen the staff.
