A pair of hermit ibises arrives in Nuoro: there are only 280 in all of Europe
The presence of these birds in Sardinia is an extraordinary event: the species is particularly protectedAn extraordinary event, considering that in all of Europe there are only 280 specimens. Two hermit ibises were spotted on the outskirts of Nuoro, in the locality of Sa Toba. Following a report received from the regional operations room of the Forestry Corps, a patrol of the Nipaf of Nuoro began an inspection of the territory that found the two birds while they were feeding in a field.
In addition to an adult named Schneider, equipped with a GPS device, the presence of a chick, a young individual, his usual gregarious, was found . The hermit ibis is a particularly protected species and at high risk of extinction: since the beginning of the last century the population has had an almost total decline. This is why the Forestry Corps has taken care of the protection of the two specimens, who spent the night on top of an electric pole.
For the two ibises, which reached Sardinia and Nuoro from the coasts of Tuscany , the Forestry Corps is fully committed to careful monitoring and, above all, to ensuring their safety, also taking into account that we are in the middle of the hunting season. At a European level, the "Life20 Northern Bald Ibis" project aims to make the hermit ibis population self-sufficient by 2028, in order to survive, if possible, without human intervention. The first results have been achieved after more than twenty years of reintroduction efforts.
