A caregiver was reported in recent days by the Alghero State Police for improper use of a debit card, having withdrawn 840 euros from the account of the elderly woman she cared for at an ATM.
The elderly woman herself noticed the theft when, while at a relative's house, she received a bank notification on her smartphone for a withdrawal of €640. A few minutes later, she received a second notification for another €200 withdrawal, made from a different ATM. The woman then realized she didn't have her wallet with her debit card.
She contacted her caregiver to check if the wallet was at home, but received a negative response . The elderly woman then contacted her bank to block the card and went to the Alghero police station to report the incident.
The officers began their investigation and quickly, thanks in part to footage captured by video surveillance cameras near the ATMs, identified the elderly woman's caregiver as the person responsible for the unauthorized withdrawals.
The investigation also revealed that the woman had already purchased a plane ticket for the following day, to return to her country of origin.
