The 75-year-old from Olbia who underwent emergency surgery after eating the fearsome and highly poisonous Amanita phalloides , which he had picked in the countryside after mistakenly mistaking it for an edible mushroom, is still hospitalized in Cagliari.
The man, who after feeling ill had been transferred to Brotzu, underwent a liver transplant on Sunday. A long and complicated operation performed by Fausto Zamboni, director of the Liver Transplant Center of Arnas Brotzu . From what we understand , the operation was "technically successful" and the patient is currently being assisted by hepatology specialists in the Hepatopancreatic Surgery department of the Cagliari hospital.
Given the seriousness of the situation, the pensioner was immediately placed on the waiting list for a transplant in “national super urgency” . Thanks to the network system of the National Transplant Center directed by Giuseppe Feltrin, a liver from a deceased donor in another region became available during the night between Saturday and Sunday. The Regional Transplant Center of Sardinia then requested the National Transplant Center to use a state flight to transfer the surgical team of the Arnas Brotzu Transplant Center to the donor's hospital for organ collection.
