Sardinia is focusing on luxury cruises: 54 high-end ships are expected to dock by December, with the home port being expanded.

The Sea Cloud Spirit returns to Olbia today with over one hundred passengers, mostly German, before embarking on an exclusive tour with stops in Bonifacio, Portoferraio, Calvi, Alghero, and Porto Cervo. Guests on board include Germany, the USA, Japan, Switzerland, England, Spain, Austria, and the United Arab Emirates.

Of the 298 scheduled arrivals in 2026, the updated program includes 96 in the luxury and ultra-luxury segments, with an estimated 26,500 passengers out of the more than 800,000 cruise passengers expected this year.

Many international brands have decided to invest in Sardinia and the high-end cruise sector: the Four Seasons I docked in Cagliari between March 25 and 26, the Vidanta giga yacht docked in Olbia and Golfo Aranci in June, and a third called in Cagliari on November 16.

Cagliari has 46 ports, Olbia 29; but they are Golfo Aranci (8 out of 8), Porto Torres (9 out of 9), and Arbatax (4 out of 5). Another element connected to the luxury sector is the multi-port formula.

In the 2026 schedule, for example, the Belle des Océans repeats the Porto Torres-Olbia route six times and, between October 23rd and 26th, extends the same itinerary to the port of Cagliari. The Clio, meanwhile, alternates between Arbatax and Cagliari four times. The Renaissance, operated by Compagnie Française de Croisières, is scheduled to dock at Oristano-Santa Giusta on October 14th.

The temporal distribution is equally significant, with a peak concentrated in the autumn months. While in August there are only three calls in this segment across the entire port system, leaving ample space for large ships in the contemporary market, the so-called shoulder months are showing the most significant growth: 16 calls in September, 23 in October, 12 in November, and 3 in December.

Overall, the last four months accounted for 54 of the 96 luxury landings for the entire year. On the commercial front, another strength comes from the expansion of air connections, especially between Olbia and the United States (New York and Newark, with Delta and United Airlines).

"The interest," says Domenico Bagalà, president of the Sardinian Sea Port Authority , "from new international operators and the entry of major brands demonstrate Sardinia's ability to establish itself as a competitive destination for quality cruise tourism. Concentrating calls during the shoulder months is a concrete opportunity to build new seasonality. The consolidation of intercontinental connections to Olbia also opens up the concrete possibility of developing homeport functions in more ports in the system, bringing to our territories not just a one-day stopover, but also a stay before and after the cruise."
