Flavio Cobolli defeated American Zachary Svajda in four sets and reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros for the first time . The Roman tennis player prevailed in over three hours of play with a score of 6-2, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6.
The match was thoroughly dominated in the first two sets by the world number 14 (who will become at least 11 by the end of this tournament). The American won a hard-fought third set in a tiebreak, and the fourth and final set was a thriller. Cobolli immediately took a 4-0 lead and then a 5-1 one, but couldn't close it out, and his opponent pulled back to even the score and took a 6-5 lead. Flavio managed to push the score to a tiebreak and closed it out 7-5, a crucial victory in a match that was going terribly wrong.
This will be Cobolli's first quarterfinal in Paris, the second-ranked player in Grand Slams after being defeated by Djokovic in the Wimbledon quarterfinals last year. The Italian will face the winner of the Auger-Aliassime-Tabilo match .
In the afternoon and evening it will be the turn of the other two Italians involved in the round of 16: Matteo Berrettini challenges the Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Sinner's "executioner", Matteo Arnaldi faces the American Francis Tiafoe .
