Matteo Berrettini defeated Francisco Comesana after a marathon match lasting over five hours and advanced to the round of 16 at Roland Garros. The Italian won 7-6, 5-7, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, after also saving two match points from the Argentine in the final supertiebreak.
"I'm so happy, and grateful to my incredible team. My family in the stands and the cheering in the heat, in the sun, we fought together. Thank you," said the Italian after securing the victory after five hours and thirteen minutes of play, the longest match of his tennis career.
The previous record was 4 hours and 49 minutes. "Francisco played an incredible match," said Berrettini, cheered by the Parisian crowd. Like fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli, he is now flying to the round of 16 at the Porte d'Auteuil.
