The Council of Ministers has given the green light to the decree that extends the cut in excise duties on fuels until 8 July. The intervention is also extended to methane, so the excise duty goes to zero and VAT is reduced to 5%.

"Urgent measures regarding excise duties and VAT on fuels", this is the name of the approved decree "in consideration of the persistence of the economic effects deriving from the exceptional increase in the prices of energy products".

The rates of excise duty are restated as follows: gasoline € 478.40 per thousand liters; oil from gas or diesel used as fuel, € 367.40 per thousand liters, LPG used as fuel € 182.61 per thousand kilograms; natural gas used for transport, zero euro per cubic meter with a VAT rate that drops to 5 percent .

The decree also introduces anti-speculation monitoring whose head is the Price Guarantor, who can also use the Guardia di Finanza. The guarantor will monitor "the trend of prices, also relating to the sale to the public" and in the case of methane will monitor the trend "within the entire commercial distribution chain".
