Oscar, Garrone enters the top five. Oppenheimer leads the nominations

Io Capitano's adventure towards the Oscars continues. The film by Matteo Garrone, Italy's candidate, entered the top five for best international film .
The nominations for the March 10 Oscars were announced in Los Angeles. Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer continues its unstoppable race towards the night of the stars with 13 nominations, one less than Titanic in 1998. Poor Creatures! by Yorgos Lanthimos stopped at eleven, Killers of the Flower Moon at ten (including the tenth as director for Martin Scorsese who thus surpassed Steven Spielberg), Barbie at eight (with two excellent exclusions, Greta Gerwig director and Margot Robbie best actress) and Master of Seven (Bradley Cooper snubbed for director). For the first time, three films directed by women are in the top ten : Barbie, Past Lives by Korean-American Celine Song and Anatomy of a Fall by French Justine Triet, whose film, Palme d'Or at Cannes, was boycotted by France for best foreign film. Today Triet became the eighth woman nominated for an Oscar for directing. With Greta Gerwig out, he will challenge the men in five: Scorsese, Nolan, Lanthimos and the British Jonathan Glazer of Zone of Interest.
Jurors from 93 countries, another record, chose the nominations. Oppenheimer and Barbie , phenomena of the summer at the cinema with global takings of 2.3 million dollars, will compete for the most prestigious prize with American Fiction, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Povere Creature!, Past Lives , Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest . Netflix, which has never won best picture, leads the nominations with 18 ahead of Apple, Disney's Searchlight and Universal.
For best actress the challenge will be between Lily Gladstone of Killers of the Flower Moon (the first Native American candidate) and Emma Stone of Poor Creatures! (the 2017 Oscar winner for La La Land is in her fourth), in the running with Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Sandra Huller of Anatomy of a Fall and Annette Bening of Nyad : the little film about the Cuba-Florida swimming marathon of an ultraswimmer The sixty-year-old turned out to be one of the surprises, with Jodie Foster also given a supporting role, her first in 29 years.
Among the actors, the nominees are the same as the Screen Actors Guild: Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin' , Paul Giamatti for Holdovers, Murphy for Oppenheimer and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction. Leonardo DiCaprio was snubbed again , while Scorsese's film earned a supporting nomination for Robert De Niro.
As for foreign films , the Spanish film The Snow Society by JA Bayona, the German film The Teachers' Lounge by İlker Çatak, the British film The Zone of Interest are competing against Io Capitano, already the Silver Lion for directing at the last Venice Film Festival. by Glazer and Perfect Days, nominated by Japan but directed by Wim Wenders .
