Nuoro mourns the loss of Ninni Careddu, a historic figure in sport and the city's memory.
The city has lost one of its most recognizable figures in the world of sports, journalism, and local radio. Ninni Careddu, longtime president of the Nuoro Provincial Committee of the Italian Volleyball Federation (FIPAV), director of the Gennargentu team, journalist, author, and a leading figure in a long period of commitment to the city's sporting life, passed away this morning . The news of his passing has sparked deep mourning throughout the city, among athletes, coaches, managers, and friends who for years shared gyms, fields, meetings, and pages of history with him.
Careddu was a historic figure in Nuoro sports and local radio, but also a man capable of leaving his mark on the community's storytelling. His style was direct, knowledgeable, and engaging: he knew how to observe events from the inside, conveying to the audience not only the results, but also the faces, journeys, and human context behind each story.
His name remains particularly linked to Nuoro volleyball, which he oversaw with continuity and a sense of responsibility as president of the FIPAV Provincial Committee . In that role, he accompanied the movement's growth, supported the clubs, valued the work of the coaches, and always paid special attention to the youth and referees, whom he followed and supported with great care, never failing to listen, encourage, and be present. For many, he was a reliable figurehead, capable of combining determination and availability, discipline and attention to people.
But Careddu was also a key figure in Nuoro basketball . He dedicated years of direct involvement to Gennargentu as president, helping to write one of the most important chapters in the city's sporting history. That club was more than just a team, but a symbol of identity, belonging, and collective pride. Along the way, Ninni Careddu combined organization, passion, and memory, becoming one of the most attentive guardians of a sporting history that has shaped generations.
Alongside this work of preservation and storytelling, she has also combined writing. In 2023, she published Inseparably Together, a volume dedicated to the history of volleyball, while in 2025 she published Canestri Vincenti, a book dedicated to the history of Gennargentu and Nuoro basketball . Two different works, but united by the same goal: to ensure the city's sporting and human heritage is not lost.
Ninni Careddu also followed a family tradition. His father, Cavalier Francesco Careddu, was a charismatic figure in the Nuoro and regional sports world, deeply rooted in the history of the Gennargentu and its roots in the city. From him, Ninni inherited a tradition of commitment, dedication, and a sense of belonging, carrying it forward with consistency and authority.
With his passing, Nuoro bids farewell to a discreet yet crucial figure in its history. The memory of a man who knew how to narrate, direct, and preserve sport as a living part of the city's identity remains.
