Resounding. Roberto Mancini has resigned as coach of the Italian national football team and the FIGC is already working to find a replacement.
"The Italian Football Federation announces that it has taken note of the resignation of Roberto Mancini from the position of coach of the Italian national team, received yesterday in the late evening ", reads a press release from the FIGC.
"Taking into account the important and close commitments for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers (10 and 12 September with North Macedonia and Ukraine), the FIGC will announce the name of the new national coach in the next few days ".
"My resignation as coach of the national team was my personal choice ," Mancini himself wrote on Instagram in the evening. «I thank the federal president, Gabriele Gravina, for the trust, together with all the members of the FIGC. I greet and thank all my players and fans who have accompanied me in these 5 years. I will always carry the extraordinary victory of the 2020 European Championship in my heart".
Thus ends a chapter that lasted 5 years in the history of the blue, which saw its highest point in the triumph at the 2021 European Championships , after the victory against the hosts England, and the lowest not even a year later, the defeat with North Macedonia condemning the Italians to watch the second World Cup in a row as mere spectators .
