"I agree on the need and the opportunity for the Region of Sardinia to have its own representative in the European Parliament".

Thus the Minister for Regional Affairs and Autonomy Roberto Calderoli , after the green light, by the Sardinian Regional Commission for Autonomy, to the text of the national law proposal for the single Sardinia constituency in the European elections , a proposal that will now have to be approved by the Sardinian regional council.

The objective of the legislative process is to "separate" Sicily and Sardinia on the occasion of the vote for the renewal of the EU Parliament, to date merged into the single "island Italy" district.

Minister Calderoli explained: «I agree with the request of the regional councilors of the Region of Sardinia for an amendment to law no. 18 of 1979 to provide for the establishment of the new "Sardinia" district and to have a different definition of the constituencies for the European elections, as it is clear that the single constituency "Sicily - Sardinia" penalizes the election of Sardinian deputies in the European Parliament" .

"Therefore - concludes Calderoli - I am available to meet the Sardinian delegation as soon as possible to discuss methods and timing for the launch of a reform of the system for electing members of the European Parliament, which guarantees adequate political representation for Sardinia".

The President of the Regional Council Michele Pais had written to Calderoli and to the Speaker of the Chamber Lorenzo Fontana , precisely regarding the need to provide Sardinia with its own college for the European elections, asking precisely for the availability of a proper meeting «to discuss the details of this reform which will have to be approved before the next electoral appointment for the renewal of the European Parliament".
