6 days after the final approval by Parliament, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella promulgated the law on differentiated autonomy. Since its publication in the Gazzetta, the provision has become state law and allows Minister Roberto Calderoli to start negotiations with Veneto and the Regions for the devolution of the requested matters, but also allows those who want to promote a referendum to take action.

«If June 19th went down in history as the date of the approval of the Autonomy, June 26th is certainly a historic date in which President Mattarella promulgated the Autonomy law », commented the governor of Veneto Luca Zaia . «Now we will wait for the publication in the official gazette and then ask to restart the negotiations with respect to the matters foreseen by the constitution», he added.

Article 4 paragraph 2 of the Calderoli law allows the Minister for Regional Affairs to open negotiations for the immediate devolution of the 184 functions that do not require the definition of the Lep (including delicate issues such as professions). For the latter it will be necessary to wait for the legislative decrees, for which the government has 24 months, and only subsequently will Calderoli be able to open negotiations to devolve the remaining 320 functions.

Mattarella's quick decision also benefits the regional presidents who intend to oppose the law on differentiated autonomy through a referendum. Like the Sardinian governor Alessandra Todde: the 5 Star Movement, she said, "will collect signatures for the referendum and does not exclude the reminder to the Council", to challenge the reform in the Constitutional Court. "We will use all the means and instruments we have as a Region with an autonomous statute," he assured. Mattarella's quick signature removes any impediment to a purely political decision.
