His name is Francesco Cabras, he is 47 years old and he is a Carabinieri of the ROS, the Sardinian who ran over three traffic policemen two nights ago in Rome, seriously injuring Daniele Virgili, 25 years old, who had his leg amputated .

The officers were busy investigating an accident on the Tiburtina, near the GRA, when the Carabiniere's Toyota Yaris, overtaking cars in a queue heading towards Rome due to the narrowing of the road, hit them.

According to some witnesses, he was proceeding "at high speed". This circumstance is yet to be ascertained, while the blood alcohol level detected in the carabiniere is certain: 1.97, practically four times over the legal limit of 0.5 .

Cabras was on vacation and was returning from a dinner with friends. According to the story of Daniele Virgili's father and brother, who arrived immediately at the scene of the tragedy, "he was laughing in front of all of us, in a cocky way, perhaps he hadn't even realized what he had done" .

The man is being investigated for very serious road accidents aggravated by drunk driving. For the moment his license has been withdrawn and no other measures have been taken. But the Carabinieri will soon evaluate disciplinary action against him .

When the Toyota crashed into the local police officers, Virgili and his colleagues Ceruisco and Lombardo were on the roadway heading towards Rome where a motorcyclist had fallen to the ground. He was hit first by the car and crushed against the municipal service vehicle, which overturned due to the force of the impact . His colleagues were grazed. Virgili lost a lot of blood and to save his life the doctors had to amputate his leg. The young man managed to call his brother: "I'm dying, I can't feel my leg anymore, I love you," he repeated several times.

And now the family of the young agent, recently hired and still on probation in the local police force of the capital, are asking for justice: " I will quit my job and dedicate my whole life to Daniele, I will live only for him to get the justice he deserves after a drunk destroyed his life ," explains the father. "Daniele was dutiful, he hated these people who drive drunk, and one of them reduced him to this," he declares in tears.

This is the medical bulletin this morning: "The boy is in contact with the environment and able to relate to his family. The clinical course of the limb that underwent surgery (one leg was amputated, the other was saved in extremis with an operation, ed.) is regular. The general conditions, however, remain serious and the prognosis is reserved ."
