Three years ago the first case of Covid-19 was detected. Since then the world has paid a very high price in terms of victims and many social balances have been upset.

In Italy so far a total of 25 million people have been infected, while the deaths claimed by the virus in our country have been almost 184 thousand.

In Sardinia alone, the total cases were over 495 thousand , while the confirmed victims almost reached 2,900.

The sad anniversary of the start of the pandemic that brought the world to its knees for many months was also remembered today by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres .

"Three years ago, these days, the Covid-19 virus was detected for the first time," said the UN number one, who stressed that since his first appearance in Wuhan, China, on December 31, 2019 , "the costs of the pandemic have reached a catastrophic level ".

“Millions of lives have been lost and hundreds of millions of people have fallen ill. Economies have been brought to their knees, healthcare systems strained, and billions of dollars gobbled up,” Guterres added.

"For their part, developing countries have often been left to their own devices and have often been sadly denied the vaccines, tests or treatments that nations need to protect their populations," the UN secretary said. , underlining that "as a global community, we must learn the hard lessons of Covid and invest decisively in preparedness, prevention and response to other pandemics ".
