Thousands of plastic bottles of ketchup and mayonnaise from the United States are arriving on the coasts of Salento. The former are all empty, the latter full and still sealed.

How they ended up in the sea, for now, is a mystery. A real mystery, the hypothesis is that some ships have lost them.

The ketchup bottles are red and came in two waves, the first being larger and the second being smaller. Almost all empty, only some have a little ketchup mixed with sea water inside.

They arrive on the beaches of Lecce and Gallipoli, to a lesser extent also on the Brindisi coast.

Enzo Suma, creator of the “Archeoplastica” project, documented the unusual phenomenon. Suma himself a year ago documented the arrival by sea of numerous packs of preserves from Albania.
