The illicit use of Holy See funds by Cardinal Angelo Becciu occurred even though there was no "profit motive". This is what can be read in the reasons for the sentence filed by the Vatican Tribunal regarding the case involving the Cardinal of Pattada .

"The liability - we read in the documents - cannot be questioned even on the basis of a further argument that he instead intended to enhance in several circumstances: the claimed lack of utility on the part of Becciu. The argument - the reasons continue - may perhaps have its relevance in a meta-procedural dimension (so much so that it has also found prominence on the media level), but from the purely legal perspective (which is the only one that can be examined in this context) it loses all meaning" because "the purpose of profit is completely extraneous to the offence of embezzlement provided for by the Vatican legal system".
