"We cannot afford to be indifferent or look away. It is time to join forces." Gino Cecchettin said this at the presentation of the Foundation dedicated to his daughter Giulia, the young Venetian woman killed by her boyfriend Filippo Turetta in November 2023.

"When you face such tragedies, life always surprises you by giving you new goals. And today I am here to talk to you about this. In addition to a tribute to Giulia, the foundation's commitment is to involve each of us," added Cecchettin, explaining that "the foundation has the task of educating in order to bring about change. Gender violence is the result of a collective failure: it is not just a private matter. We must educate the new generations."

The Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara intervened at the presentation with a video message: «The free and non-discriminatory possibility of having various opportunities for personal and professional fulfillment – said Valditara – is a fundamental objective of those who believe in the values of the dignity of each person . And to pursue it we have two paths in front of us: one is concrete and inspired by constitutional values, the other is ideological culture. Generally, ideological paths never aim to solve problems, but to affirm a personal vision of the world. And the ideological vision is the one that would like to solve the women's question by fighting against patriarchy ».

Patriarchy that according to Valditara no longer exists in Italy because «it ended with the reform of family law in 1975 , which replaced the family based on hierarchy with the family based on equality». But, Valditara underlined, «in our country there are still residues of male chauvinism, of machismo, that must be fought and that lead to considering women as objects».

Valditara also stated that the increase in crimes against women is linked to immigration: "It must be clear to every newcomer, to all those who want to live with us, the scope of our Constitution, which does not allow discrimination based on sex. We must not pretend not to see that the increase in sexual violence is also linked to forms of marginalization and deviance that in some way derive from illegal immigration."

The minister's words, especially those on the patriarchy, were not fully appreciated by Giulio Cecchettin: «Let's say - commented Giulia's father - that there are shared values and others on which we will have to confront each other».

Video message at the presentation of the Foundation also from the Minister for the Family Eugenia Roccella : «I fear that no law could have saved Giulia Cecchettin or other women who did not suspect the violence that was brewing in the heart of the man who claimed to love her and who appeared to the world as a good guy », said Roccella. Adding: «We all know that it is necessary to intervene on many other fronts, if we really want to try to change the male attitude towards the new freedom of women».
