Sixteen years in prison. This is the sentence handed down today by the Turin court to Sara C., the adult defendant in the case of the young student from Palermo who, on the evening between 20 and 21 January 2023, was seriously injured after being hit by a bike dropped from the top of the Murazzi del Po embankment.
The girl was accused of complicity in attempted murder. The judges did not grant mitigating circumstances. The student, Mauro Glorioso, was with some friends on the riverside waiting to enter a club. The perpetrators of the throw were identified as a small group of five teenagers. Three minors were definitively sentenced, with an abbreviated trial, to sentences ranging from six years and eight months to nine years and six months; the appeal trial for the other adult will be repeated at the end of January after the previous sentence was annulled by the Court of Cassation.
The girl defended herself by saying that at the moment of the bike's launch she had secluded herself with her friend at a certain distance from the place. "She did not participate in the act," said her defenders, lawyers Enzo Pellegrin and Federico Milano. "The sentence," declared lawyer Pellegrin, "is extremely harsh and does not reflect the convictions of the defense. Of course, the act had terrible consequences, but the sentence is disproportionate. The minor friend, who was with her and like her did not take part in the launch, was given a little more than six years."
The prosecutor Livia Locci had proposed 12 years with the concession of mitigating circumstances equivalent to the aggravating ones.
After the sentence was read, the young woman felt ill and was taken to hospital for tests.
