He saved his daughters, aged 12 and 8. Then he helped the elderly father carry their mother outside. And then he went back inside the burning house, perhaps in an attempt to put out the blaze. But he never came out again.

Salvatore Benfari, 47, died like this. The tragedy occurred in the afternoon in a house on Via Roma in Caltabellotta, in the province of Agrigento.

A violent fire broke out in the house. Benfari was in the cellar with his father and, having noticed the situation, rushed to save the little girls. In those frantic moments the father thought of his wife, who was seriously burned but alive.

The 47-year-old returned to the house to try to fight the fire but was trapped inside, charred to death.
