Orio al Serio airport has been closed since 8am this morning after a Ryanair flight from Barcelona suffered a burst tyre on the rear landing gear shortly after landing .

There were no injuries, border police and firefighters intervened to evacuate the passengers and the operations of the airport were suspended.

The tire explosion caused damage to 450 meters of the runway and the reopening of the airport is estimated for 8 pm this evening, there was a delay because it was initially scheduled for 5 pm . Incoming flights were made to land at other airports such as Malpensa and Verona.

"The damage has affected the surface of the pavement, which is scratched to a depth of about one centimeter - explain Sacbo, the company that manages the airport -. For this reason, it is necessary to restore the pavement with an urgent intervention entrusted to a specialized company".

Flight FR846 from Barcelona El Prat had 162 passengers and 6 crew members on board . When the tires burst, the aircraft was still moving slightly, but the pilot managed to contain it on the runway. No fires were reported in the landing gear or elsewhere.
