"The peak has not yet been reached" and with the spread of the Omicron variant "we risk 100,000 cases a day".
Word of Walter Ricciardi, who spoke on Sky Tg24 to talk about the current epidemiological situation.
Regarding the vaccination obligation extended to all Ricciardi is opposed: "Our country has reached one of the highest coverage in the world, the obligation now would be an extreme and divisive measure, necessary for countries like Austria and Germany that have low coverage".
However, he argues, we must insist and further increase the number of immunized: “There are some categories, workers in contact with the public, who become vectors. We must ensure that they are all vaccinated ”.
In January, Ricciardi expects "a very strong increase in cases, so at that moment we will have to take stock of the situation and see if to introduce many measures".
With Omicron the booster dose “also protects against infection, not totally but significantly, as well as from serious illness. The two-dose cycle, on the other hand, strongly protects against severe disease but not infection ". For this the third dose "is necessary".
On a “less violent” variant from the point of view of clinical manifestation, “yesterday a study came out but to say the end on this we have to wait”, he observes. "We are moving in an area where there are still many vaccinated, so before saying that it is less violent we should see what the effects are on unvaccinated people, who in Western countries are a minority but an important one".
