Rain halts the Palio di Siena. The rain that fell this afternoon on the city, and particularly on Piazza del Campo, prevented the festival from proceeding as planned.
The tuff on the track, made wet by water, makes horse racing dangerous and consequently puts the safety of jockeys and animals at risk.
The stop came from the Municipality at the end of a meeting with the captains and the magistrate of the contrade: from one of the triple lancet windows of Palazzo Pubblico, the town hall, a green flag was displayed, announcing the postponement of the race.
Rain on Palio day is nothing new in Siena. This year, it occurred during the July race, and in recent years, the weather has prevented the festival from proceeding as planned on its traditional days three times. The event has therefore been postponed, weather permitting, to tomorrow.
