Pope Francis spent a quiet night at the Gemelli hospital in Rome after yesterday's three-hour bowel surgery. The operation, said the team led by Professor Sergio Alfieri, ended "without complications" .

The pontiff "reacted well" and when he woke up he appeared "alert and conscious", he even made "some jokes".

The post-operative course is currently proceeding as expected. Among the many reactions and attestations of closeness on social media, that of Father Antonio Spadaro, director of Civiltà Cattolica: «Yes, he has a strong fiber. But above all great faith and… a great sense of humour. Always and in spite of everything ».
