"In the next few hours, tomorrow at the latest, we will issue a directive shared with Education Minister Valditara, which we will send to school principals and prefects. This will mean that, at the request of school principals— and therefore in full respect of school autonomy—the prefects and I will be able to decide to carry out checks in schools, both in front of and at the entrances, in connection with the growing phenomenon of knife use by students."

The crackdown was announced by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.

The government official emphasized that the inspection "may be conducted unannounced when requested by school principals. Obviously, if there are concerns about criminal activity, and therefore judicial investigations are underway, the inspection may be conducted in a different manner upon order of the judicial authority."
