Carabinieri marshal Fabio Manganaro was sentenced to two months in prison - with a suspended sentence, accused of blindfolding Christian Natale Hjorth, convicted of the murder of deputy brigadier Mario Cerciello Rega. The young American had been arrested together with his friend Finnegan Lee Elder .
This was decided by the monocratic judge of Rome. The accusation against the defendant is a measure of rigor not permitted by law, i.e. an abuse of authority. The facts date back to 26 July 2019: Hjorth was blindfolded after being taken to the barracks in via in Selci, in Rome, for questioning. The prosecution was asking for a three-month sentence. Judge Alfonso Sabella also ordered a compensation of five thousand euros in favor of the boy.
The photographs of the blindfolded American, not taken by Manganaro, were circulated in a chat and then ended up in the newspapers. Previously, the marshal had declared that he had blindfolded Hjorth to prevent the boy from self-harming acts .
For the murder of Cerciello Rega in March 2022, Hjorth was sentenced on appeal to 22 years in prison , while Elder to 24.
