A few days before the official opening of the Olympics, controversy erupts regarding the possible presence at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games of ICE agents, the US special unit that has come under fire for its heavy-handed action in Minnesota .
Lombardy Region Governor Attilio Fontana intervened on the issue, explaining that "ICE will only be here to monitor US Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Rubio , so it will only be a defensive measure, but I am convinced that nothing will happen."
The Lombardy Region then clarified: "Fontana only answered a question from journalists, but did not confirm the presence of ICE in Italy, as he does not have this information."
Sources from the Ministry of the Interior's Department of Public Security later clarified: "It is denied that ICE USA will operate in Italy . To date, no collaboration agreements have been signed for the Olympics. All public order and security activities in Italy are managed, without the possibility of exceptions, by the Ministry of the Interior and its local branches: prefectures and police headquarters."
And again: "There are no reports, at this time, that US ICE agents are accompanying the American delegation to escort it. The composition of the US escort, in fact, has not yet been communicated by their authorities."
